Amazon Editor’s Pick: 101 Places to Get F*cked Up Before you Die!

Not my words!

Not my words!

‘Scuse the title, but that’s the name of the book!

And Utila is number 88, in case you’re wondering.  Considering Ibiza, Spain is just ahead at #84, that’s not so bad!  And Utila is before New York City, so nany nany boo boo!

Seriously though, Utila has so much to offer and the party scene is one aspect to Utila’s charm and beauty.  There is one thing for sure, if you’re looking for a party, you can find one EVERY NIGHT here on Utila.

Personally, I get tired just thinking about it!

There’s the night-walkers and the day-divers.  And the young ones you’ll find doing both!

Check out this amazing video made by two dive instructors. You can tell my the number of views, over 179,000, that partying is a huge part of  Utila!  If you’ve ever been to Utila, you’ll also realize that it is very true, “If you come to Utila, you may never leave…”  It happened to me.  I’m on my 15th year!

Deadly Starfruit! I wasn’t trying to kill you!

Toxic Fruit!

Delicious and potentially deadly!

WARNING:  DO NOT EAT STARFRUIT IF YOU HAVE KIDNEY PROBLEMS!

I am so sorry, but I just learned that the lovely starfruit we were giving away around town earlier this week, is toxic to those with kidney problems!  It all started while off giving away our starfruit bounty the other day, we came across some locals who warned of toxins found in Starfruit seeds.  The couple said they learned of the danger when watching Discovery Channel.  They warned that the seeds were toxic and they should not be ingested, or even put in the mouth. It was the first time I had heard such a thing, so I started researching Carambola, or Starfruit.

I was startled to discover that this delicious fruit we have been eating and giving away is toxic to some, even causing death!!  Although the couple’s story was not completely accurate in that the seeds are toxic, the actual fruit is!

Starfruit contains a neurotoxin that affects the body’s brain and nervous system.  To a normal healthy body Starfruit, poses no problem.  However, for those who have weak or problematic kidneys, the fruit can cause serious problems such as:

Starfruit Danger
7 Armed Starfruit!
  • Hiccups
  • Vomiting
  • Numbness of limbs
  • Decreased muscle power
  • Muscle twitching
  • Confusion
  • Convulsions

Free Concerts from Members of the National Philharmonic Orchestra

20141010_195243 20141011_203500 20141012_141945 20141012_142330 20141012_142521 20141012_142623 20141012_145442What started out as a tentative approach to bringing Chamber Music to Utila has grown into a beautiful example of community. Over FIFTY, yes FIFTY businesses have donated more than 80 prizes, time, lodging, food, funds, personnel and so much more to bring an octet, all members from the Honduran National Philharmonic Orchestra, to Utila to play free concerts all around the island.

David Araya (solo clarinet in the YouTube video below) wanted to come with to Utila to play for free around the island.  He made a post on one of the Utila community facebook pages, and Tony & I piped up immediately saying “We would love you to come!”…  and that’s how the story began, with one and it turned into a community of supporters!

We thought about having a raffle to raise funds to bring David here with a quartet.  With the outpouring of charity of so many businesses in Utila and even from the mainland, it was clear that we could bring an octet from the Honduran National Philharmonic to Utila.  Not only could we bring an octet here, businesses started to offer:

Free transportation for the group:

Hedman Alas provided round-trip transportation on the mainland.  And two bus tickets anywhere in Honduras, for the raffle. (Approximate cost of donation = $620)

http://www.hedmanalas.com/

Utila Princess ferry offered round-trip transportation from La Ceiba to Utila and back.  (Approx. Value = $432)

Free Lodging for the group:

Colibri Hill Resort    http://www.colibri-resort.com/

Laguna Vista  https://www.flipkey.com/utila-condo-rentals/p268525/

Chez Milady https://www.flipkey.com/utila-condo-rentals/p413659/

Free Meals for the group:

El Castillo Restaurant:  http://www.colibri-resort.com/

Camilla’s Bakery/Pizza Nut – Located on the Main Road by the Point

Mango Inn Bar & Grill:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mango-Inn-Bar-Grill

Jungle Café:  http://utilaguru.com/

Neptune’s Restaurant:  http://www.coralbeachvillage.com/Bar-Restaurant.asp

Then all the businesses starting offering prizes for the raffle to raise money for the rest of the expenses.  The finances from the weekend are still being finalized but it seems that there is still more than 10,000 lps left to bring the group back soon!

If you missed it, here are a few YouTube videos from their recitals:

Where else in the world can you find a community that bands together like Utila to bring more beauty to her island?  Not many places I’m guessing.
Special thanks go to:
Naomi Jackson from the HotSpot Café and Tourist Information Center for volunteering to sell refreshments during the concerts!  Which probably turned out to be a lot more work than she anticipated!

JJ King and Eric Johnson for helping with the sound system so everyone could enjoy the concert.

Victor Lobo and the youth group for helping with the set-up and children’s concert and providing the kids with a little snack!

Lisa Barry, Monica Perez and all those who helped sell tickets.

All the sponsors and volunteers who helped make this happen!

And all of you who purchased tickets for the raffle and who attended the recitals.

A round of applause goes to Utila!  And to the wonderful orchestra!  Thank you all it was an amazing community effort!

Support is immense with tons of businesses donating for the groups’ accommodations, meals, and a raffle to raise funds for their expenses.  All proceeds not required for their expenses will be put back into trying to get them to return a few months later, and ultimately, trying to get the entire National Philharmonic Orchestra here to Utila one day!

No Land Line Phone Service in Utila

no phone

Please note that there are no working land lines in Utila .

All numbers starting with 2425-XXXX are out of service.

Apparently the phone company has not paid their past few electricity bills.

It’s ironic because I forgot to pay my phone bill and thought they cut me off!

This will affect some businesses’ internet if they have Hondutel service.

So please use cell phone numbers to contact those in Utila.

Cell phones are functioning normally.
